CAF moves AFCON to June/July

CAF moves AFCON to June/July

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee has moved the Africa Cup of Nations from January/February to June/July.
The shift in date was to enable European clubs to release their African players for the tournament as the league seasons in that continent traditionally close in May.
At the first expansion of the AFCON participating teams from eight to tweve in 1992, the tournament was held on an experimental basis in January.
The January/February calendar was adopted at the 1996 tournament in South Africa and that calendar has been operational until now.
It was on Thursday announced that the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon will be contested by 24 teams, as opposed to 16.
A number of major changes were formalised as CAF’s executive committee met in Rabat, Morocco.
The committee adopted recommendations made at a wide-ranging symposium held earlier in the week.
